John liked to play with the idea of a picture, painting paintings within the painting, perhaps challenging the viewers concept of what a painting is. John refused to be drawn on why he constructed his image in a particular way, much preferring to hear what the viewer thought.
The picture above is painted already hung upon a wall. The wall it is illustrated as hung upon is from the inside of the house illustrated.
The first image in the gallery below is a lithograph, a system John experimented with briefly, but did not pursue.
