Easter Pictures

A series of Easter themed paintings, often drawing on some now quite obscure Christian imagery – for instance the pelican, ripping at its own breast to feed its young was seen as a symbol of the Resurrection up into mediaeval times. The crucifix shaped picture is unusual in its form, unique in John’s output as far as we know, and reflected John’s long interest in the religious icons of the Orthodox church.

John was brought up in the Baptist church, although he worshipped at Stoke-by-Nayland’s Anglican church in later life.
