surrealist British artist, 1937 - 2004
The images here are based on the idea of a painting already wrapped in brown paper and string, but with the painting itself 'escaping' from the wrapping. The string itself is not actually string, but is made of layers of paint, painstakingly applied by John to provide the illusion of string.
Further to this idea are the canvas pictures, images of the back of canvas, sometimes with the painting on the 'front' of the picture, theoretically turned away from the viewer, escaping to the back of the canvas.
